There were two reason why this book was written: firstly, there seems to be at the present time, and indeed in many occasions throughout the history of the Christian church, a special need for some serious attempt to be made to indicate the line that divides sound from unsound Christian practice, more especially in large gatherings and in the more advanced stages of the Christian life.
And secondly, the author being a Christian doctor, has the expertise to logically and Biblical examined this matter in a godly way. He has for many years exclusively engaged in seeing and trying to help nerve sufferers of all sorts, including large numbers of Christian people who have lost their health through religious excesses of various kinds, or through some morbid forms of religious exercises.
So this work is written to give guidance to the believer as to a Biblically sane approach to the Christian faith.
